The Years Between Wars
Term | Definition |

Fascism | system of government characterized by strict social and economic control and a strong, centralized government usually headed by a dictator |
Totalitarianism | modern government with control over every aspect of public and private life |
Roaring Twenties | decade of economic growth and widespread prosperity, driven by recovery from wartime devastation and deferred spending, a boom in construction, and the rapid growth of consumer goods |
Propaganda | information, especially of a biased or misleading nature, used to promote or publicize a particular political cause or point of view. |
Censorship | forbidding the views of people who disagree with the government |
The Great Purge | large-scale repression of relatively wealthy peasants (kulaks); ethnic cleansing operations against ethnic minorities |
The Five-Year Plans | Stalins economic plan in Soviet Union, meant to increase factory and farm production |
Blackshirts | private army that broke up strikes and socialist meetings, gaining Mussolini popularity |
Mein Kampf | book written by Adolf Hitler during his imprisonment in 1923-1924, in which he set forth his beliefs and his goals for Germany |
Gestapo | the secret state police in Nazi Germany |
Gulag | Soviet work camps, mostly located in Siberia |
Adolf Hitler | leader of the Nazi Party in Germany during WWII, who became a totalitarian dictator & wanted to create a pure "Aryan" race |
Joseph Stalin | totalitarian dictator of Russia who succeeded Lenin |
Benito Mussolini | ruler of Italy whose goal was to create a colonial empire, and agreed to ally with Germany and become one of the Axis Powers during WWII |
Hideki Tojo | Japanese politician and general of the Imperial Japanese Army who served as Prime Minister of Japan and President of the Imperial Rule Assistance Association for most of World War II |
Hirohito | emperor of Japan who ruled during a time of economic crisis for Japan as well as throughout WWII |
