What were monasteries? Religious communities, and were centers for learning
What united the Germanic tribes? The beliefs of the Roman Catholic Church/Christianity
What role did women have in the medieval society? Women were taught by the Church that they were inferior to men
Who had more power, the Pope or the King? The Pope had more power than the King because they were more educated and held the power of reaching heaven over the king and his people
Lay Investitures were ...? Kings and nobles appointing church officials
What was one of the problems in the Church? Some of the priests were men of questionable morals
What three main issues distressed reformers most? Many village priests married and had families which was against Church rulings, bishops sold positions in the Church, and kings appointed church bishops
Who enforced Church laws against the marriage of priests? Pope Leo IX and Pope Gregory VII
What was the pope's group of advisers called? the Papal Curia
Why were larger cathedrals called the cities of God? They were built in city areas and were viewed as the representation of the City of God
What was the main advanced in Agriculture? Oxen were replaced with horsepower, iron plows made it easier to plant crops, and an extra field system was added
What was the results of the three field system? Food production increased, villagers had more to eat, and people could resist disease and live longer because they were healthier
What were common trade items? Cloth, bacon, salt, honey, cheese, wine, leather, dye, knives, and ropes
How did the new banking system develop? Bills of exchange and letters or credit were established.
How did the merchant class help to break down the feudal system? The new middle class could make more money and attain more power than the nobles
Who did Britain battle in the 800s? The Danish Vikings
What did Alfred the Great nickname England? Land of the Angles
Why is the Battle of Hastings considered the battle that changed the course of English history? After victory, William declared all of England his person property, and Harold was killed by an arrow piercing his eye
What two goals did English kings tried to achieve over the next centuries? They wanted to hold and add to their French lands, and wanted to strengthen their power over the Church and nobles
What important step helped towards democratic government? The Model Parliament
What disasters struck during the 1300s and 1400s? The Church divided, the Bubonic Plague took place, and the Hundred Years' War took place
Why did the Bubonic Plague spread so fast? Black rats carried fleas, people didn't clean themselves or take baths, medieval people threw their garbage and sewage in the streets which created unsanitary conditions, and fleas carried by rats leapt from person to person
What were symptoms of the Bubonic Plague? Painful swellings in the lymph nodes, purplish or blackish spots on the skin, and extremely high fever, chills, delirium, and most likely death
What were the main results of the Bubonic Plague? Millions of deaths, town populations fell, trade declined, prices of goods rose, the serfs left the manor, nobles demanded for higher wages, Jews were falsely blamed for bringing on the plague, and the Church suffered a loss of prestige
What was the cause of the Hundred Years' War? Edward the III launched a war for the throne of France after his grandfather died.
