Dental Embryology Terminology

TermDefinition
Mitochondria membrane-bound organelles that lie free in the cytoplasm and are present in all cells except RBC & keratinocytes; self-replicating and contain maternal DNA, the principle site of energy (ATP) generation in the cell
Cell Nucleus the master control center containing cell's DNA; nuclear envelope communicates with other structures; nucleolus produces cell's RNA; nuclear pores are openings to endoplasmic reticulum; in all except mature red blood cells and blood platelets
Golgi Apparatus help sort, condense, package, and deliver proteins arriving from the ER; composed of cisternae (flat plates) or saccules, small vescicles, and large vacuoles; release contents by exocytosis at cell surface
Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum has ribosomes on it, which are small organelles whose function is to make proteins
Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum synthesis of lipids, steroid hormones, the detoxication of harmful metabolic byproducts and the storage and metabolism of calcium ions within the cell
