Estates System | Social system in France before the French Revolution divided people in the first, second, and third estates; the inequality in the estate system was one of the causes the French revolution |
Hierarchy | a system for ranking group of people. There were people who work for the church- In the Catholic Church these include the Pope, bishops and priests-members of the 1st estate. |
Clergy | members of the 1st estate |
Nobility | a class of people that are usually wealthy and own land- members of the 2nd estate |
Commoner | a lower class person; non nobility of the 3rd Estate- included bourgeoisie, urban poor, peasants |
Deficit Spending | Americans in the American Revolution, but the government kept spending $ |
Estates General | a legislative body made up of representatives from each of the three estates from all of France; called into order by Louis XVI to settle debt issues |
Representative | a person who speaks or acts for a group or community; the Estates General had unequal representation |
National Assembly | (1789-1791) the elected legislature in France during the first part of the French Revolution (Moderate Stage) |
Tennis Court Oath | (June 20, 1789) a promise by the members of the National Assembly to meet until a constitution was written and enacted |
Constitution | the set of basic laws and principles by which a nation, state, or other organization is governed; goal of the National Assembly was to draft a Constitution |
Emigres | people who moved from one country or reign to another; many members of the former 1st and 2nd estate fled France as emigres |
Maximilien Robespierre | (1758 -1794) leader of the Committee of Public Safety and the Reign of terror during the French Revolution who was executed |
Reign of Terror | (Sept 5, 1793 - July 28, 1794) a period of intensive violence in the French revolution led by Maximilien Robespierre and the Committee of Public Safety |
Guillotine | a device used during the French Revolution to execute a massive amount of people who were viewed as 'enemies' of the Revolution |
Committee of Public Safety | A 12 member committee formed during the Reign of Terror; they determined the people's fate with the Guillotine |
Republic | A Form of democracy where the people have representatives; the National Convention acted as one |
Treason | The betrayal of one's county by going to war against it or giving information to its enemies; Louis XVI was accused of treason and executed by the Guillotine |
The Directory | A 5 member committee who ran after Robespierre was executed; it became corrupt and ineffective |
coup d'etat | An overthrown of a government; Napoleon waged one against the Directory |
Napoleon Bonaparte | military leader and later emperor of France who brought order ad stability towards the end of the Revolution. He attempted to conquer all of Europe, but failed and was eventually exiled to a remote island for the rest of his life |
