Imperialism When a stronger country takes control of a weaker country or territory.
Racism The belief that one race is better than another.
Social Darwinism An idea by Charles Darwin. Strong and smart people would grow in power and influence over the weak.
Westernize To make more European
Berlin Conference Meeting of 14 European countries to divide Africa between them.
Paternalism Treating conquered people as if they were children who needed to be cared for.
Assimilation Forcing local natives to adopt colonial culture and become like them.
Geopolitics An interest in or taking of land for its strategic location or products
Suez Canal A human-made water canal that connected the Red Sea and the Mediterranean Sea (on coast of Egypt)
Sepoy Indian soldier
“Jewel in the Crown” Nickname for India, England’s most valuable colony because it was a major supplier of resources and had a large number of people to sell products to
Sepoy Mutiny Rebellion of the Sepoys against the British due to beef/pork covered cartridges
Raj Direct control of India by the British under Queen Victoria
Pacific Rim Countries that border the Pacific Ocean (Ex. Philippines, Malaysia)
Annexation Adding or “adopting” a territory
Opium War War between England and China to stop opium (a drug) from being sold in China by British traders
Taiping Rebellion The “great peace.” A movement in China meant to end poverty of the Chinese people.
Open Door Policy Policy that opened China to trade with all nations.
Boxer Rebellion A rebellion led by a group called the Boxers to fight against foreigners getting more privileges than the Chinese
