Alexis' ch. 9 Vocab- Life at the Turn of the 20th Century

TermMeaning
Literacy The ability to read and write.
Assimilation The process by which people of one culture become part of another.
Philanthropist People who give donations to worthy causes.
Niagra Movement A group of African Americans that called for full civil liberties.
Vaudeville A type of inexpensive variety show that first appeared in the 1870s.
Yellow Journalism A reference to the yellow ink used in a popular comic strip of the era.
Ragtime
Poll tax A special fee that must be paid before a person was permitted to vote.
Grandfather clause Exempted men from certain voting restrictions if they had already voted, or if they had ancestors (grandfathers) who had voted prior to blacks being granted suffrage.
Segregation A system that ensured that African Americans were treated as second-class citizens.
Jim Crow
Plessy v. Ferguson (blank)
Lynching The murder of an accused person by a mob without a lawful trial.
Nation Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) Group whose purpose was to abolish segregation and and descrimination, to oppose racism, and to gain civil rights for African Americans.
Department store Large reatail establishments carried such a wide variety of goods they were divided into departments.
Rural free delivery (RFD) Gave farm familes access to big-city goods through mail-order catalogs.
Mail-ordering catalog Printed materials advertising a wide range of goods that could be purchased by mail.
