Democracy | A political system in which the supreme power lies in a body of citizens who can elect people to represent them. |
Revolution | The overthrow of a government, form of a government, or social system by those governed and usually by forceful means. |
Monarchy | Government by one individual, usually a king, queen, emperor, or empress. |
Presidential democracy | Type of government with an executive branch presiding separately from a legislature; legislature is voted in by the people for a fixed term; and a president is elected to a fixed term of office and can be removed. |
Constitutional monarchy | A system of government in which a monarch acts as head of state within the parameters of a constitution and is a ceremonial head of state. |
Absolute monarchy | A system of government in which a monarch is the ruler and has complete power over the lives of his/her people. |
Divine right of kings | Where monarchs claim the right to rule because of the family he/she was born into or raised within. |
Oligarchy | A system of government in which a few people, such as a dominant clique, have power. |
Dictatorship | A system of government ruled by an individual, who gives people little or no individual freedoms, and does not have hereditary ascension. |
Theocracy | A government ruled by priests or religious law and has no separation between church and state. |
Capitalism | Type of economony the United States has. |
United States | Example of a country with a presidential democracy. |
Dictator | Examples are Adolph Hitler and Fidel Castro. |
American Revolution | The war that gave the 13 colonies of North America (now part of the United States) their independence from England. |
