Early China
| Term | Definition |

| warlords | military leaders who lead their own armies; a military commander exercising civil power by force, usually in a limited area |
| aristocrats | people of noble birth whose wealth came from the land they owned; upper class society usually made up of hereditary nobility |
| ancestors | long-dead family members; a person someone is descended from |
| pictographs | characters that represent objects; a symbol in a writing system based on pictures |
| ideographs | a character that links two or more pictographs to express an idea; a symbol in a writing system that represents a thing or idea |
| bureaucracy | non-elected govt officials who carry out the tasks of the govt |
| hereditary | having title or position by reason of birth |
| Mandate of Heaven | belief that a Chinese king's right to rule came from the gods |
| Dao | Chinese belief system which described the way a king must rule |
| Confucianism | belief system based on the teachings of Confucius |
| Daoism | philosophy concerned with living a good life and living in harmony with nature |
| legalism | philosophy that stressed the importance of laws |
| filial piety | a person responsibility to to respect and obey their parents |
| censor | an official whose job was to make sure others did their work and followed correct behavior |
| currency | a type of money; coins or paper to exchange for services or products |
| civil service | the administrative service of a govt.; govt workers chosen based upon ability |
| tenant farmers | a person who works land, owned by someone else, and pays rent in cash or share of the crop |
| accupuncture | to treat diseases or pain by inserting thin needles in specific areas |
