| polis | a Greek city-state |
| tyrant | someone who seizes power and rules with total authority |
| oligarchy | a govt where a few wealthy people hold power over the larger group of citizens |
| democracy | a govt in which all citizens share in running the government |
| helots | Spartan name for their slaves |
| ephors | high-ranking Spartan officials; they enforced the laws and collected taxes |
| satrap | governor of a Persian province |
| satrapy | the territory governed by the satrap |
| Zoroastrianism | Persian religion based on the belief of one god |
| direct democracy | all citizens meet to debate and vote on govt matters |
| representative democracy | citizens elect a smaller group of people to represent them , make laws and govern on their behalf |
| philosophers | thinkers who reflect on the meaning of life; a person who searches for wisdom or enlightenment |
