Terms used to describe the Upper Extremity & its parts

TermDefinition
Clavicle Commonly called the collarbone. The sternal end is medial, and the acromial end is lateral.
Scapula Commomly called the shoulder blade. This triangular shaped bone articulates the clavicel and the humerus
Humerus The arm bone. Articulates with the scapula, the radius, and the ulna.
Ulna The medial forearm bone. Articulates with the humerus, radius, and carpals.
Radius The lateral forearm bone. Articulates with the humerus, ulna, and carpals.
Carpals Wrist bones. 4 proximal and 4 distal. Scaphoid— Lunate— Triquetrum— Pisiform— Trapezium— Trapezoid— Capitate— Hamate
Metacarpals Numbered 1-5 from lateral to medial and located in the hand. Articulate with the carpals and phalanges.
Phalanges Also called digits. Articulate with adjacent phlanges and metacarpasl. Each finger has 3, the thumb only 2.
Sternoclavicular the joint between the sternum and the clavicle
Acromioclavicular The joint between the acromion process of the scapula and the clavicle
Shoulder Girdle Includes the clavicle and scapula
Glenohumeral joint the shoulder joint made between the scapula and humerous
Humeroradial Part of the elbow joint where the humerus and radius articulate
Humeroulnar Part of the elbow joint where the humerus and the ulna articulate
Radioulnar The joint between the proximal and distal radius and ulna
Transverse Carpal Ligament The retaining band on the anterior side of the wrist that creates a tunnel along with the carpal bones.
Carpal tunnel compartment created by the carpal bones and the transverse carpal ligament where tendons and nerves pass through the wrist
Radiocarpal joint wrist joint, where the radius and carpals articulate
Carpometacarpal the joint where the carpals and metacarpals articulate
Metocarpalphalangeal the knuckle joints, articualtion between the metocarpals and the phalanges
Interphalangeal The joint between the phalanges
PIP The proximal interphalangeal joints
DIP The distal interphalangeal joints
Interosseous connective tissue membrane in the space between the radius and ulna. Also seen between the tibia and fibula.
Axillary Armpit
Brachial arm
