Militarism Glorification of the ideals of a professional military; build up of weapons
Alliances Defense agreements between countries
Imperialism Social, economic, political control of one country over another; gaining territory to build an empire
Nationalism Pride in your nation; desire for interdependence from an empire and right to rule your own country
Ultimatum Final set of demands
Propaganda Spreading of ideas to promote a cause or to damage an opposing cause
Total War Channeling of a nations’ entire resources into the war effort
Self-Determination Right of people to choose their own form of government
Trench Warefare Miles of deep trenches dug into the ground; rats, lice, weather
Stalemate Deadlock in which neither side is able to defeat the other
Appeasement Policy of giving in to an aggressor’s demands in order to keep the peace
Reparation Payment for war damage, or damage caused by imprisonment
