Imperialism
Vocabulary for Imperialism Unit.

Nationalism- one’s nation, who supports for its interests | total devotion to one’s country, sometimes to the exclusion of the interests of other countries. |
Imperialism- extension of a country’s power | the domination by one country of the political, economic, or cultural life of another country or region. |
Social Darwinism (ethnocentrism)- evaluation of others country. | the theory that human groups and races are subject to the same laws of natural selection, as Charles Darwin had perceived in plants and animals in nature. Therefore, cultures and societies live by the principle of “survival of the fittest” |
Mother Country-relation to colonies | a country who rules and has control over other nations |
Direct Rule-province controlled by a central government | when the mother country sends officials and soldiers to the colonies to impose their cultures on the colonists they control. (practiced by the French) |
Indirect Rule- A system of government | allowing sultans, chiefs, or other local rulers to maintain rule over their own territories but with oversight and direction from the mother country. (practiced by the British) |
Partition- the action of being divided into parts | to divide into parts (as Africa was during European colonization) |
White Man's Burden- a task white colonizers believed they had to impose their civilization on black inhibitants | the belief that it is the duty or job of the Europeans to “uplift” and educate the “uncivilized” natives. |
The "Scramble" for Africa-14 Europe countries met in Berlin to agree the rules of African colonization | the race by European powers to take control over African territory. |
Interdepenence- the dependence of two or more people | the dependence of countries on each other for goods, resources, knowledge, and labor from other parts of the world. |
Mercantilism- benefits of profitable trading | a policy where the mother country exploits its colonies by exporting crops and other commodities to improve its balance of trade (export more than you import) |
Civil Disobedience - refusal to abide by certain laws | the refusal to obey unjust laws (also known as nonviolent protest) |
