Unit 307

Carry out second fixing double doors and ironmongery

TermDefinition
Slave The term given to the door in a pair of double doors which usually remains closed.
Flush bolts These fittings are recessed into the door edge (top and bottom) and slide upward or downward into the jamb (or threshold) to keep the door closed.
Intumescent strip This is a piece of material grooved into a doorway or door edge that when exposed to heat, expands closing any gaps around the door to stop the fire spreading for a period of time.
Rebated mortice lock This piece of ironmongery is in most cases a standard mortice lock with added items known as a rebating kit which enables the lock to be fitted neatly into the rebates of a pair of double doors.
Finger plate This is a rectangular metal plate fitted on the side of the door which needs to be pushed open. It is located in such a way that it covers the fixing bolts for the pull handle on the opposite side of the door.
Concealed door closer This is a door closer fitted into the edge of the door and the jamb of the door frame. This means that when the door is shut the closer is hidden.
kick Plate These are fitted to the bottom of the door to reduce the amount of damage the door takes over time. They are fixed on the push side of the door. The term comes from the fact that when people's hands are full they tend to use their feet to open the door.
Overhead door closer A piece of ironmongery connected to the top of the door and the head of the door frame, ensuring that the door always closes after being used . It is compulsory to fit these on fire doors
Rebate This is either machined into the stile of the door or fitted as a plant on strip to both meeting edges of a pair of double doors.
Double action doors This is a single door or a pair of doors in which the door(s) is able to swing in both directions. Usually by use of a floor spring
Floor spring This piece of ironmongery is fitted so that it finishes flush with the finished floor. The door is fitted onto this by means of another fitting enabling the door to open both ways.
