Africa & Trade Route

Terms and Definitions for Trade Routes and African Kingdoms

TermDefinition
Silk Road Trade route that went across Asia to the Mediterranean basin, goods traded were silks, spices, paper, and porcelain. Technology was astrolabe and paper money. Ideas spread was buddhism.
Indian Ocean Maritime Route Trade route that went around the Indian ocean, goods traded were textiles and spices. Technology used was lateen sail, sugar making, and cotton. Ideas spread were Buddhism and Hinduism .
Trans Sahara Route Trade route that went across the Sahara desert from west Africa to the Mediterranean. Goods traded included gold and salt. Technology was the camel saddle and the idea spread was Islam.
Northern and Western Europe Route Trade route that went along rivers and seas of Europe. Products traded included textiles and amber gems. The technology used included water wheels and windmills.
South China Sea Route Trade route that went from south china to Indonesia and pacific islands. Products traded included textiles, spices, and gem. Ideas that spread were Buddhism and Islam.
Axum 3rd-6th Century AD. Located relative to the Ethiopian highlands and the Nile river. First African Christian kingdom. Was politically and economically linked to Roman Egypt.
Zimbabwe Located between the Zambezi and Limpopo rivers. Utilized Indian ocean trade routes. The city of Great Zimbabwe was prosperous.
West African Kingdoms Included Ghana, Mali, and Songhai. Located near the Niger River and the Sahara desert. Integral to the gold and salt trade in the Trans Sahara route.
Timbuktu City of trade and learning.
