Academic Vocabulary

6th grade Academic Vocabulary

affix an additional element placed at the beginning or end of a root, stem, or word, or in the body of a word, to modify its meaning.
analogy a comparison between two things, typically for the purpose of explanation or clarification. Three types: Synonym is similar in meaning to lucky : fortunate Antonym is similar in opposite to lament : rejoice Part to Whole is a part of stanza : poem
appositive a phrase, usually a noun phrase, that renames another phrase or noun. My best friend, Sammy, lives in Cleveland. The word Sammy is the appositive in that sentence, as it renames the noun phrase 'my best friend.'
author's Viewpoint the way an author looks at a topic or the ideas being described.
independent clause It has a subject and a verb and requires no extra information to understand.
dialect a particular form of a language which is peculiar to a specific region or social group.
narrative writing can be broadly defined as story writing – a piece of writing characterized by a main character in a setting who encounters a problem or engages in an interesting, significant or entertaining activity or experience.
adjective phrase a group of words that describe a noun or pronoun in a sentence.
adverb phrase a group of words that refines the meaning of a verb, adjective, or adverb.
prepositional phrase draws a relationship between a noun or pronoun and another word in a sentence. ... examples include about, after, at, before, behind, by, during, for, from, in, of, over, past, to, under, up, and with.
dependent clause starts with subordinating conjunctions such as "while," "that," or "unless," cannot stand on their own as sentences.
plagiarism the practice of taking someone else's work or ideas and passing them off as one's own.
predicate adjective an adjective that follows a linking verb and modifies (i.e., describes) the subject of the linking verb
predicate nominative is a subject complement, a word or group of words that follows a linking verb or verb phrase such as is, are, was, has been, and can be.
simple sentence a sentence consisting of only one clause, with a single subject and predicate.
compound sentence a sentence with more than one subject or predicate.
