Plot Terms

TermDefinition
Exposition When the reader learns about the characters, setting and conflict
Resolution Loose ends of the story are wrapped up as the conflict has been settled
Foreshadowing Clues that suggest what will happen later in the story
Inciting Incident Event that triggers the main conflict of the story
Climax The turning point in a story where the conflict is resolved one way or another
Setting The time and place in which the events of a story happen
Conflict A struggle between opposing characters or forces
Plot A series of related events
Rising Action Main part of the story, obstacles create additional conflicts or building the main conflict
Person vs. Self Conflict A struggle between a character and his feelings, conscience, or fear
Person vs. Person Conflict A struggle, mental of physical, between two characters
Person vs. Nature A struggle between a character and mother nature
Person vs. Society A struggle between a character and the laws or beliefs of a group
