Swedish techniques can be categorized by these 5 components: | Direction of movement, Pressure, Rhythm of Movement, Rate of Movement, Duration, Part of MT's hand or arm that is used. |
Direction of Movement | For relaxation or reduction of edema, the direction is centripetal(towards the heart) or in the direction of blood flow & when possible parrallel with the muscle fibre direction. |
Pressure | Light pressure for relaxation, deeper pressure used to reach deeper structures & for treatment of adhesions. |
Rhythym: | An even rhythm should be used. |
Rate of movement | Slower rate used for relaxation, can be matched to the rate of repiration of the client. More quickly for stiumulating effect. |
Duration of treatment | Depends on the size of area massaged, pathological condition and clients tolerance. |
Part of therapists hand or arm to be used. | Various parts of the hand or arm may be used to apply a technique. |
To Achieve a relaxing effect: | Any technique applied in a slow, rhythmical & repetitive manner will evoke a relaxation response & decrease sympathetic nervous system firing. With predidctable pattern & even rate. |
To achieve a stimulating effect: | Techniques applied with briskness, in more erratic and less predictable patterns will generally increase the sympathetic nervous system firing. |
