TermDefinition
garbage collector In general English = a person who takes away the rubbish from the street. In Java = an automatic memory management program which finds unused objects and deletes them to free up memory.
sweep In general English = to use a brush or broom to clean the floor. In Java = to clear unreachable objects to free up memory e.g. in the Mark and Sweep algorithm
reference In academic English = a source that is given in the text/bibliography. In Computer Science = a value for indirect access to something in the computer's memory or in some other storage device.
heap In general English = an untidy pile e.g. of rubbish or (plural) large amount e.g. of homework. In Java = a kind of data structure
footprint In general English = the mark your feet make e.g. in the sand. In Java = the amount of space a unit of hardware or software takes up
execution In general English = a public killing. In Computer Science = process by which commands make something happen in a program. Verb = execute
gate In general English = a small outdoor door in a fence through which people can pass. In Computer hardware = electronic switches in a digital circuit
