Term | Definition |
---|---|
Academic Renewal | An undergraduate is readmitted after an absence of at least five years. |
Advanced Placement | A high school course that does college-level work; students who earn 3 or better on an end-of-year examination will usually earn college credits |
Concentration | A formalized selection of courses within a major |
Cross-listing | When one course may have more than one prefix and may be offered by more than one construction unit. |
FERPA | Family/Education/Right to/Privacy/Act |
Incomplete | A mark given when a student who is doing acceptable work is unable to complete a course due to circumstances beyond his/her control. |
Cum Laude | 3.40 to a 3.59 |
Magna Cum Laude | 3.60 to a 3.79 |
Summa Cum Laude | 3.80 to a 4.0 |
Matriculated | A student who is formally accepted to the college and is working towards completing a degree |
Non-Matriculated | A student who is not officially accepted into a university and is taking classes but is not working towards the completion of a degree |
Academic Probation | A student may be placed on academic probation if s/he has failed to maintain good standing (under a 2.0) with the university. |
Audit | A student pays tuition and attends regularly scheduled class sessions but earns no credit. |
Doctorate | 60+ credits(+BA & sometimes MA) |
Masters | 39+(+ BA) |
Bachelors | 120 credits |
Associates | 60 credits |
Full Time Student | 12 or more credits |
Part Time Student | less than 12 credits |
Credit Enrollment | The number of classes a student is taking in a given semester. |
Freshmen | 24 or fewer credits |
Sophomore | 25 to 55 credits |
Junior | 56 to 86 credits |
Senior | 87 or more credits |
Major | A formalized group of courses contained within a student’s undergraduate career (39-48 credits) |
Minor | A second, less in-depth area of study (18 credits) |
Lower Division Courses | Courses numbered 100-299 are designed primarily for first and second year students |
Upper Division Courses | Courses designed primarily for juniors and seniors |
Placement Test | A proficiency examination to determine a student’s ability in a field where competence is an important consideration (usually English and math) |
General Education Requirement | A university requirement for all undergraduates Usually 45-48 credits These are your liberal arts credits (English, math, history, science with lab, language, social science, fine arts, etc. |
Course Prefix | A three letter designation assigned to a group of courses. |
Prerequisite | A requirement meant to be done before registering for a class. |
co-requisite | A requirement to be met while taking one course, |
Cooperative Education | Any educational program that requires alternating classroom and work experience |
Pass/Fail | A grade given to a class that does not give out a numerical grade but does earn the student academic credit |
Add/Drop | A process in which a student who has registered for a course for a semester may drop or add classes through the first week of classes. |
W/Withdrawal | During the second week through the tenth week of fall or spring semester, a student may leave a class with a mark of “W” on their transcript. |
Transcript | An official copy of a student’s permanent academic record that lists (in chronological order) all courses taken and includes all grades received. |
Grade Point Average(GPA) | The points assigned to each of the grades for each semester hour. |
Declaration Of Graduation | A process that produces a report called a degree audit) that shows the student which requirements are satisfied and which remain to be fulfilled. |
FAFSA | FREE/APPLICATION for/FEDERAL/STUDENT/AID |
Independent Student | 24 years old/Ward of the court/orphan/Married/Graduate student/Has dependents(children)/Veteran |
Dependent Student | Your financial aid is calculated based on your parents’ income (even if they don’t plan on giving you a dime towards college) |
Grants/Scholarships | Free money to help pay for college or career school |
Loans | A thing that is borrowed, especially a sum of money that is expected to be paid back with interest. |
Subsidized | Interest doesn't get added until you finish school |
UnSubsidized | interest begins accumulating as soon as the loan is taken out |
Parent Loans | Loans that a parent takes out |
Work Study | Provides part-time jobs for undergraduate and graduate students with financial need, allowing them to earn money to help pay education expenses |
