Term | Definition |

allusion | an indirect reference to something commonly known, such as an event, a book, a myth, a place, a person, or a work of art |
analogy | a similarity/comparison between two different things or the relationship between them. Can explain something familiar by associating it with something more familiar |
alliteration | the repetition of initial consonant sounds in two or more neighboring words |
connotation | the implied, suggested, meaning of a word; non-literal |
antecedent | word, phrase, or clause referred to by a pronoun; the word replaced |
ambiguity | multiple meanings of a word, phrase, sentence, or passage...it could be one, or it could be another...unspecific |
aphorism | terse statement of KNOWN authorship, which expresses a general truth or moral principal; proverb; summation of the point |
colloquialism | The use of slang or informalities in speech or writing. Not generally acceptable for formal writing. Dialectical talk. |
apostrophe | A figure of speech that directly addresses an absent or imaginary person or a personified abstraction such as love or liberty. An address to someone that cannot answer. |
allegory | The device of using character/story elements symbolically to represent an abstraction in addition to the literal meaning. An author may intend the character to personify an abstraction like hope or freedom. |
clause | A grammatical unit that contains a subject and verb, and can stand alone as a simple sentence, or may be used together with another construction as a compound or complex sentence. |
conceit | an extended metaphor or surprising analogy between seemingly dissimilar objects. Its use displays intellectual cleverness as a result of the unusual comparison being made. |
