Term | Definition |

Early Childhood | The period of life from birth to nine years of age. |
Prekindergarten (Pre-k) | A full range of childhood programs including school based programs for three to five years old. |
Nanny | A child care worker who usually provides care in the child's home and may receive food and housing in addition to wages. |
au Pair | A person from a foreign country who lives with a family and provides child care in exchange for a room, board, and transportation. |
Head Teacher | Responsible for aspects of class functioning. |
Family Child Care Home | Childcare that is provided in the care givers own home. |
Licensing Specialist | A person employed by a state to protect and promote a health, safety, and welfare of children attending centers. |
Child Development Associate (CDA) Credential | A national credential that requires post secondary courses in child care education and a minimum number of hours of childcare experience. |
Developmentally Appropriate practice (DAP) | An approach to working with young children that is based on knowledge of how children learn and develop at different ages and stages. |
Cultural diversity | The presence of multiple different cultures or ethnicity. |
Entrepreneur | A person who creates and runs his or her own business. |
Ethics | A guiding set of moral principles, either those held personally or those determined by a professional organization for its members. |
Professional Development | An ongoing process through which people update their knowledge and skills related to their professional life . |
