TermDefinition
Theme The theme is the main idea or message of the story.
Internal Conflict Character vs. Self
The five different external conflicts are: 1. Character vs. Character 2. Character vs. Nature 3. Character vs. Society 4. Character vs. Supernatural 5. Character vs. Machine/Technology
Plot A story line
Exposition Introduction to characters, setting
Rising Action Adds incidents of greatest tension
Climax Point of greatest tension
Falling Action Relaxes the conflict to prepare for conclusion (not always present)
Resolution Resolves the conflict, ends plot
Characterization The creation/description of a character
Protagonist The main character in a story
Antagonist Person against the main character
Dynamic Character Changes during the course of the story; they act and are change by their actions.
Static Character Do not change
1st Person Narrator tells story (uses "I" and "Me")
3rd Person Narrator tells story from outside; telling only what an observer would see.
3rd Person Partially Omniscient Narrator is outside of the story; but can see in heart and mind of ONE character.
3rd Person Omniscient Narrator is outside the story; but can see into the heart and mind of ALL characters.
Setting Where the story takes place
Mood The atmosphere or feeling in the literary text
Tone The author's attitude toward a subject or an audience.
Flashback A character remembers an earlier event that happened before the current point of the story.
Foreshadowing A writer gives an advance hint of what is to come later in the story
