Tools Vocabulary

Describes tools used in grade 5 science

TermDefinition
balance measures mass of an object by balancing the object against weights
spring scale measures weight or force of an object using a spring; the object being weighed hangs on a hook
meter stick measure length in metric units; measures 100 cm long
ruler measures length in standard and metric units; usually 12 inches or 30 cm long
tape measure measures length using a flexible material, like tape or fabric
clock measure time; it can hang on a wall
stop watch measure time; usually used when people/objects are racing; you hold it in your hand
thermometer measures temperature; can be degrees Celsius or Fahrenheit
graduated cylinder measures liquid volume; they are tall and skinny, and used by scientists
measuring cup measures liquid volume; usually have a handle and are used in the kitchen at home
triple beam balance measures mass; has 3 weights that are moved ; seen in a doctor's office
beaker measures liquid volume; usually made of glass and has no handle; used by scientists
