Essential Science

Essential vocabulary for science

TermDefinition
Physical Science Study of inanimate natural objects including chemistry, physics, and astronomy
Chemistry Scientific study of the structure, properties, and reactions of the chemical elements and the compounds they form
Physics Scientific study of the nature and properties of energy including heat, light, and mechanics
Theory Explanation of some aspect of the natural world that can be repeatedly tested
Law Statement based on repeated experimental observations that consistently prove to be true and are accepted by the scientific community
Observation The data collected using the five senses to learn about objects or events
Inference A logical explanation or conclusion based on observations and/or facts
Measure To compare the characteristics of something with a standard
Scientific Method Systematic observation, measurement, and experiment, and the formulation, testing, and modification of hypotheses
Hypothesis Educated guess based upon evidence and used as a starting point for investigation
Independent Variable The variable that is changed or directed by the scientist
Dependent Variable Variable being tested or measured
Control Aspects of the experiment that remain unchanged in order to measure the dependent variable
Experiment A test using observations and controlled variables to discover answers to questions and/or check a hypothesis
Data Facts and statistics collected for reference or analysis
Qualitative Measured by appearance, color, shape, or anything OTHER than numbers
Quantitative Measured by numbers
