MissK-Black Death

Black Death by Miss Kenton---STHS

QuestionAnswer
How many Europeans were killed by the plague? 20-25 million or 1/3 of Europe
Where did the plague originate? It originated in Mongolia near China's border (Gobi Desert), traveled along the Silk Road to the Black Sea, and then traveled to Europe through the Mediterranean into Sicily.
What is the Black Death? A disease caused by a bacteria; 3 forms; 2 forms spread by fleas, and 1 form was airborne.
What are the 3 forms of the Black Death? 1) Pneumonic---attacked lungs (airborne) 2)Septicemic---appeared in bloodstream (deadliest) 3)Bubonic---formed buboes on body (most common)
Explain how the flea spread the plague bacteria. Bacteria multiplied in the flea's gut as it continued to feed off of a host mammal. The flea would regurgitate the bacteria into the host mammal, therefore transferring the disease.
How did warfare play a role in the spread of the plague? The Tartars flung dead bodies over the city walls with a catapult to purposely infect the Genoese sailors with the plague. The sailors fled and took the disease with them back to Italy.
Why were people unable to prevent or control the plague from spreading? Did not know cause (blamed it on the planets, God's wrath at sinners, Jews, & foul smells). Also did not know cure, so they tried ineffective methods (eating pomanders, drinking chopped snake & molasses, quarantine, rang bells, & masks filled w/ herbs).
How was the economy effected by the Plague at first? Large #'s of workers died=loss of artisan skills=wages rose; Serfs demand freedom, left manors, & gave up farming=loss of crops & higher prices due to low supply; lack of law enforcement= increased crime; small population=less taxes collected
Symptoms of the Black Death Coughing, sneezing, vomiting blood, buboes in the armpit, neck, & groin, sweating, thirst, pain throughout whole body, fever, & dark purplish/black spots.
Reactions to the Black Death Quarantined houses/villages, ignored family members, forced ships out of ports, blamed innocent people, burned down homes/villages, fled out of fear, & no one would visit the home of a sick person (not even priests, lawyers, or doctors)
How did medical workers try to protect themselves from the plague? They wore a costume that was supposed to act as a filter, filled with materials imbued with perfumes and alleged disinfectants. The lenses were supposed to protect the eyes from the miasmas. Leather gloves & hat worn as well, but it did not help them.
How was the church affected by the plague? The church lost some believers as they were in search of answers & the church had none. Some clergy abandoned their duties & fled cities. People were angry; some even revolted against the church. Others turned to extreme measures (Flagellants).
How was art affected by the plague? Instead of reflecting religious themes, artwork now portrayed sadness and death because of the depressing surroundings. Carvings of dead bodies on coffins and paintings contained skeletons socializing.
How were children affected by the plague? Games reflected the era (like Ring-around-the-Rosy), exposed to dead bodies & public chaos, abandonded by parents, and males favored over girls who could carry on the family name.
What is Delta-32? A genetic mutation; blocks healthy cells from being attacked by the plague and AIDS. 1 copy= sick but recovers; 2 copies= never sick
What were some of the positive effects of the Black Death (in the long run)? Inflation decreased eventually; business grew; increase in profits and wages; new industries; improvement in standard of living; cities emerged & feudal system declined
What is AIDS? A disease caused by a virus that attacks the immune system. A genetic mutation that prevents the plague can also protect against AIDS.
How were the serfs impacted by the plague? The feudal system declined because some serfs were able to gain freedom after master's died. With fewer mouths to feed, less land was needed for farming, so it became cheap, allowing the poorer classes to buy it. The standard of living became better.
