How did Athens get its name? Athena and Poseidon quarreled about ruling the new city. Zeus made a contest to resolve the matter. Poseidon made a war horse, and Athena made an olive tree. Zeus picked Athena's olive tree as the winner, so...the city became known as Athens.
Who did Theseus first encounter on his adventure? a robber with a club. He killed the robber and kept the club.
Who did Theseus encounter second? a man who set traps in pine trees. Theseus put the man into his own trap.
Who did Theseus encounter third? a man who stretched or cut men to fit a particular bed. Theseus cut the man to fit the bed.
What did AEgeus hide under a stone for Theseus? sandals and a sword
How did Theseus become heir to the throne of Athens? He arrived in town with the sword.
Who was sent to Crete each year and why? 7 men and 7 maidens had to be sent as a sacrifice to the Minotaur
Why did Theseus go to Crete? He volunteered to be one of the sacrifices, believing that he could kill the Minotaur.
How did Ariadne help Theseus? She gave him a ball of thread which he unwound as he traveled through the maze; when he was done, he followed the thread to get out.
What sign did Theseus say he would give that he had survived his adventure in Crete? a white sail if he was alive
What color sail did Theseus have when he returned home? a black sail
What did King AEgeus do when he saw the black sail returning home? He fell from a cliff and drowned in the sea.
Who is the Aegean Sea named after? King AEgeus, who drowned in it after seeing the black sail
Who became king after AEgeus? Theseus
Athens city founded by Cecrops and dedicated to Athena.
Crete city which had the Minotaur
Naxos the place where Adriadne was to be sacrificed to the gods
