What are gliding strokes? Strokes that glide over the skin moving with even pressure while your hand is molded to their body
What is the purpose of gliding? Spreading lubricant ; General relaxation ; Preparation of the tissue for deeper strokes ; Assistance in lymphatic and venous flow
All gliding strokes except light strokes should be . . . directed towards the heart
Gliding strokes may be applied with what? 2 hands ; 1 hand ; Fingertips ; Thumbs ; Knuckles ; Fist ; Forearm
What is another name for Kneading? Petrissage
What are kneading strokes? Strokes that consist of rhythmic pressing, rolling, and squeezing movements attempting to lift the tissue away from the bone
What is the purpose of kneading? To increase circulation, ridding the tissue of muscular toxins, and helps to alleviate muscle soreness
Kneading strokes may be applied with what? 2 hands ; 1 hand ; Thumbs ; Thumbs and Fingers
What is Friction ? Movement of the superficial tissue over the deep tissue. Friction does NOT glide over the skin, but rather it penetrates depth wise into the layers of tissue.
What is the purpose of friction ? Breaking down adhesions and scar tissue ; Release of trigger points or spasm into the muscle
Friction may be applied with what? Thumbs ; Fingertips ; Heel hand ; Knuckles ; Forearm ; Elbow
What are the 4 types of Friction ? Circular Friction ; Cross Fiber Friction ; Longitudinal Friction ; Static Friction
What is Circular friction ? Movement of superficial tissue over deep tissue in a circular pattern
What is Cross Fiber friction ? (DTF - deep transverse friction) movement of tissue perpendicular to the muscle fibers
What is Longitudinal friction ? Movement of tissue going parallel to the fibers
What is Static friction ? (DIRECT PRESSURE) sustained pressure on a specific location into the tissue
What is another name for Percussion? Tapotement
What is Percussion? A series of brisk blows in an alternating fashion
What is the purpose of Percussion ? To increase circulation ; To relieve muscular tension ; Helps to stimulate the client
Name the 7 Percussion movements Hacking ; Beating ; Tapping ; Slapping ; Cupping ; Quacking ; Pincement
What is Hacking ? Little finger side of the hand
What is Beating ? (Pommeling) soft fists, using the little finger side of the hand
What is another word for beating ? Pommeling
What is Tapping? Fingertips
What is Slapping? Finger Pads
What is Cupping? Open surface of the palm
What is Pincemnet ? (DUCKBITES) plucking with fingers and thumbs
What is Quaking? Hands together, fingers apart - hit with little finger side
What is the only Friction stroke done on the lower back ? Pincement (DUCKBITES)
What is Vibration? A fine or large tremulous movement into the tissue. May be on a specific point, a large muscle group (jostling), and entire limb (limb shaking)or the whole body (rocking)
Vibration may be applied with Fingers ; 1 hand ; 2 hands
What is the purpose of Vibration? Relaxation ; Stimulation ; Increases circulation
What is Stretching? Slow, gentle, sustained movement of a muscle in which the insertion and origin of the muscle is moved away from each other. Stretching should always be done within the clients limit of flexibility. NO BOUNCING.
What are some techniques for Stretching ? Passive stretches
