republic | a form of government in which power is in the hands of representatives and leaders are elected by citizens who have the right to vote. |
patrician | in ancient Rome, a member of the wealthy, privileged upper class. |
plebeian | one of the common farmers, artisans, and merchants who made up the population. |
tribune | an official elected by the plebeians to protect their rights. |
consul | one of the two powerful officials elected each year to command the army and direct the government. |
senate | the supreme governing, originally made up of only of aristocrats. |
dictator | a political leader given absolute power to make laws and command the army for a limited time. |
legion | a military unit of the ancient roman army, made up of about 5,000 foot soldiers and a group on horseback. |
Punic Wars | a series pf three wars between Rome and Carthage that resulted in the destruction of Carthage and Rome's dominance over the western Mediterranean. |
Hannibal | a Carthaginian general who was a brilliant military strategist that always hated Rome and sought to destroy it. |
civil war | a conflict between two political groups within the same country. |
Julius Caesar | a Roman general who joined forces with Crassus and Pompey to form the 1st triumvirate, was also a dictator in 44 BCE and was murdered by senators. |
triumvirate | a group of 3 leaders sharing control of the government. |
Augustus | was Caesars grandson and adopted nephew Octavian, his name means 'exalted one,' and took control of Rome. |
Pax Romana | a period of peace and prosperity throughout the Roman Empire, that lasted from 27 BCE to 180 CE. |
