medial relating to the middle/center, nearer to the midline
lateral on the side, farther from the midline to the center
distal farthest point from the origin of a structure or point of attachment; farther from the median, trunk, or center
proximal nearest the origin of a structure or point of attachment; relatively nearer to the trunk or median
flexion bending movement that results in decrease of angle in joint by bringing bones closer together
flexion (example) the elbow joint when the hand is drawn to the shoulder
extension straightenting movement that results in an increase of the angle in a joint by moving bones apart
extension (example) movement of hand away from shoulder
abduction lateral movement medially away from the midline of the trunk
abduction (example) raising arm to the side
adduction movement medially toward the midline of the trunk
adduction (example) moving the arm back to the anatomical position
circumduction circular movement of a limb, combining the movement of flexion, extension, abduction, adduction to create a cone shape
circumduction (example) doing arm circles
rotation twisting or turning of a bone on it own axis (i.e., shaking head to say, 'no.'
internal rotation rolling TOWARD midline (i.e. pigeon-toed)
external rotation rolling AWAY from the midline
