Ch. 9 Vocabulary

TermDefinition
Social cognition thought processes applied to the social domain.
Theory of Mind (ToM) the ability to infer mental states in others, such as beliefs, desires, knowledge, and intentions. Also called “people reading.”
Autism Spectrum Conditions (ASC) conditions characterized by a continuum of markedly abnormal social interaction; poor language ability; and restricted, repetitive behavior patterns. It commonly occurs with low cognitive ability.
Asperger's condition a term commonly used to refer to a condition on the autism spectrum characterized by impaired social interaction and restricted, repetitive behavior patterns, but with normal language and cognitive abilities.
Joint attention the child and another person visually explore an object together.
Moral judgment reasoning about moral dilemmas that involves justice in a context where rules, laws, formal obligations, and authority are emphasized.
Prosocial reasoning reasoning about moral dilemmas in which one person’s needs or desires conflict with another’s but in a context in which laws, rules, or formal obligations are minimal.
Social conventions standards of behavior dictated by culture.
Moral transgression behavior that is inherently wrong, independent of culture, and regardless of rules.
Moral identity the degree to which being a moral person is central to a person’s self-identity.
