Advanced Language techniques
Term | Definition |

Imagery | Words that create an imagery in your mind |
Symbolism | A word, phrase or image which stands for something. A dove. |
Rhetorical question | A question which does not expect an answer. |
Emotive language | Words and phrases that cause an emotional response in the reader |
Enjambment | A line ending in which the syntax, rhythm and thought are continued into the next line. |
Caesura | A natural pause or break in a line of poetry indicated by punctuation. ?',.&!" |
Anaphora | the repetition of a word or words at the beginning of successive phrases, clauses, or lines to create a sonic effect. (I have a dream). |
Extended Metaphor | Comparing something to something else. The metaphor is referred to more than once. |
Complex sentence | A long sentence with clauses giving more details and building a more vivid picture. |
Short sentence | Short sentence used for effect perhaps after a series of long sentences. |
Word placement | Where is the significant word in the sentence. Unusual word order highlights emphasis on particular idea. |
