6th Grade Math Vocabulary Words of the Week

TermDefinition
Percent rate per one hundred
Rational Number a number that can be expressed as a ratio, this includes all positive and negative whole numbers, decimals, percents, fractions.
Integer All the whole numbers and their opposites, including zero.
Whole Number A positive number with no fractional or decimal part.
Opposite The number that is an equal distance from zero on the opposite side of the number line.
Absolute Value How far a number is from zero. *Always positive*
Zero Pair a pair of numbers with a positive and negative sign whose sum is zero.
Ratio A relationship between two quantities Ex: On a dog the ratio of legs to noses is four to one. Can also be written as 4:1 or 4/1
Rate A ratio comparing quantities of different units. Ex: A high speed bullet train traveled 360 miles in 3 hours. The rate is 360 miles for every 3 hours.
Unit Rate A rate with a second term of one. A unit rate often has the word "per" in it. Ex: Our bullet train that traveled 360 miles for every 3 hours has a unit rate of 120 miles per hour.
Proportion A word that describes the equality of ratios. If two or more ratios are equal, they are proportional
Prime Number A whole number whose only factors are itself and one. Ex: The number 3 only has the factors 1 and 3 (PRIME) whereas 6 has the factors 1, 2, 3, and 6 (NOT PRIME)
Prime Factorization A number written as the product of its prime factors. Will be found using a factor tree.
Exponent An exponent tell you how many times to use the base as a factor. Ex: 3^4 = 3x3x3x3 not 3x4
Variable A symbol that represents an unknown value
Substitution Assigning value to the variable in an expression or equation to allow you to evaluate or solve!
Distributive Property The product of a number and a sum is equal to the sum of the products of the addends and the number Ex: a(b + c) = a x b + a x c
Independent variable a variable whose value does not depend on the value of another variable. Also called the input of a function
Dependent variable a variable whose value depends on the value of another variable. Also called the output of a function
Area 2D figures. The number of square units that can fit into a shape.
Volume 3D figures. The amount of space an object takes up V=lwh
Height Distances from the top of a figure to it's base. Height will always be draw at a right angle.
Median The middle value in a data set that is arranged in ascending order.
Mode The number that appears most often in a data set. There can be more than one mode in a data set.
Range The difference between the lowest value and the highest value in a data set.
Interquartile Range The difference between the first quartile and third quartile of a data set. (To find the first and third quartiles, you find the middle of your data set and then find the middle of the top and bottom halves!)
Mean (Average) Divide the sum of all the numbers in a data set by the number of elements in the set.
Equation A number sentence stating that two things are equal. ALWAYS has an equal sign
Expression A group of terms and operators. NO equal sign
