Tendinitis

What is tendinitis? Inflammation of a tendon.
A tendon that moves in a straight line is surrounded by a ________. Paratendon (such as the biceps tendon).
A tendon that runs across a bony prominence is surounded by a tendon sheath called an _______. Aponeurosis.
What connects muscle to bone? A tendon.

Describe the pain in Grade 1 tendinitis. There is pain during activity only.
Describe the pain in Grade 2 tendinitis. There is pain at the beginning of the activity and disappears then returns after activity.
Describe the pain in Grade 3 tendinitis. Tendinits has pain at the beginning, during and after activity.
Describe the pain in Grade 4 tendinitis. Pain with activity and during daily living.
What type of activities cause tendinitis? Tennis, golf, swimming, occupational activities.
Where is the most common place for bicipital tendinitis to occur? In the long head.
What is the best indicator of tendinitis? Pain when stretching.
What activities can cause pattellar tendinitis? Running or the step machine.
What activities can cause popliteal tendinitis? Running combined with running and pronation or tight gastrocs.
What are the signs and symptoms of acute tendinitis? Pain after or during activity, inflmmation, heat or swelling along tendon. Crepatis may develop.
What are the s/s of chronic tendinitis? Pain is localized and client should be able to pinpoint, chronic swelling or thickening, decreased ROM, decreased strength, flair ups in the acute stage with repeated overuse.
What are common observations in the acute stage? Antalgic gait or posture, swelling or redness.
What are common observations in the chronic stage? Postural assessment may also show muscle imbalances, thickening of tissue.
What are common findings during palpation? Pain occurs at the tendon, swelling and heat may be present, hypertonic and TPs.
What are the ROM test findings? AF - Painless; PR pain on compleate stretch; AR painful on the contraction of the muscle with the affected tendon.
What are special tests that can be used to prove tendinitis? Supraspinatus, infraspinatus test for shoulder tendinitis; speeds test for bicep tendinitis.
What are short term goals to treating tendinitis? - increase circulation, decrease fascial restriction, decrease TP, prepare the tendon for deep tissue frictions.
What hydrotherapy do you use for tendinitis? Since it is an inflammatory condition - ice.
