What is the definition of TMJ? Disorder of the muscles of masstication, the TMJ joints and the associated structures.
Which joint is the most frequently used in the body and most superior? Temperomandibular Joint (TMJ).
What muscles close the jaw? -Masseter-Temporalis-Ptergoid (medial)
Which muscles depress the jaw? -Lateral Ptergoid-Digastric-Mylohoid-Geniohyoid-Infrahyoid
What are the causes of TMJ? -Imbalance in the muscles of masstication-Muscle overuse-Maloclussion-Cranial or bone misalignment-Postural dysfunction (hypK or scoliosis)-Increased stress leading to jaw clenching-Trauma
What is a closing lock? When the disc is displaced anteriorly and the condyle cannot reduce over the posterior portionof the disc into depression.
What type of joint is the TMJ? Synovial modified hinge joint.
Short term goals of massage for TMJ? -Decrease pain-Decrease SNS firing-Decrease inflammation-Decrease TP
What are the ROM findings for TMJ? Reduced AF Rom
What is a test used to prove TMJ? -3 knuckle test.
What test can be used to disprove TMJ? -Atlanto Occipital test to differenciate between a tension headache.
What type of hydro do you use? Use cold on inflammation and warm on hypertonic areas.
