linguistics the scientific study of language and its structure, including the study of morphology, syntax, phonetics, and semantics. 
phonology the sounds patterns of language
phonemes the sounds that make up a language
pitch the vibration of vocal chords important in distinguishing meaning within a sentence
intonation the use of pitch to modify/change the sentence meaning
stress the increase in vocal activity that can also modify the meaning of words
morphology the study of the meaning units in a language
morphemes the basic building blocks of meaning
clipping a process of shortening words ex. teach for teacher
acronym an abbreviation formed from the initial letters of other words and pronounced as a word. ex. E.S.OL. stands for English for Speakers of Other Languages
syntax the structure of sentences and the rules that govern the formation of a sentence
semantics the study of meanings of individual words and of larger units such as phrases and sentences
pragmatics the study of communication in context
nonverbal communication is communication without words that includes body language, eye contact, gestures, facial expressions, and communicative distance
grammar the set of rules that explain how words are used in a language
