alliteration | the repetition of initial consonant sounds in words next to or near each other |
approximate/slant rhyme | words in proximity sound similar but do not rhyme |
assonance | repetition of similar vowel sounds followed by different consonant sounds |
ballad | a song-like narrative poem |
connotation | the subject, cultural, and emotional meaning of a word |
consonance | repetition of the same or similar final consonant sounds on accented syllables or in important words |
denotation | dictionary definition of a word |
elegy | poem in an elevated style in praise of and mourning the death of a particular person |
end rhyme | rhyme that occurs at the end of lines |
epic | A really long narrative poem celebrating the great deeds of one or more lengendary heroes in a grand style |
hyperbole | a figure of speech that uses intentional exaggeration to express strong emotion or create a comic effect |
imagery | the use of words to create sensory impressions including the 5 senses; descriptive language |
lyric | a poem in which a feeling or emotion is expressed |
metaphor | a figure of speech that makes a comparison equating two or more unlike things without using like, as, resembles, than |
meter | a fixed pattern of accented and unaccented syllables in lines of fixed length to create rhythm |
ode | poem written in an elevated manner celebrating or praise someone or something |
onomatopoeia | the use of word whose sound suggests its meaning |
personification | a figure of speech that applies human characteristics to nonhuman objects |
refrain | a repeated word, phrase, line, or group of lines |
repetition | repeated use of sounds, words, or ideas for effect or emphasis |
rhyme | recurring identical or similar final word sounds within or at the ends of lines of verse |
rhythm | the recurring pattern of strong and weak syllabic stresses |
simile | a figure of speech that uses the words like or as to make comparisons between unlike things |
sonnet | a poem consisting of 14 lines |
stanza | a section of a poem marked by extra spacing before and after; has single pattern of meter and/pr rhyme |
symbolism | the use of concrete and recognizable things to represent abstract ideas |
