Vocabulary Words for Energy & Temperature

Energy What is needed to do work or cause change
Mechanical Energy Energy produced by a machine or moving part
Electrical Energy Energy produced by the movement of electons
Light Energy Radiant energy that our eyes can see from the visible part of the electromagnetic spectrum
Thermal Energy Energy that causes a transfer of heat or temperature between materals
Sound Energy Energy produced from vibrations that you can hear
Potential Energy Energy that is being stored
Kinetic Energy The energy of motion
Infrared Radiation Light energy that is invisible. Its wave lengths are longer that those of visible light
Ultraviolet Light Invisible light energy that has shorter wavelengths that those of visible light.
System A group of interacting or independent parts forming a complex whole
Law of Conservation of Energy Energy can neither be created nor destroyed, energy just changes form
Energy Transformation The change of energy from one form to another
Conductor A substance that allows the flow of electric charge of transfers thermal energy through matter
Insulator A substance that resists electric current or a material that resists the flow of heat
Chemical Energy A form of energy made available by the flow of electric charge through a conductor.
Kinetic Theory of Matter All of the particles that make up matter are constantly moving.
Temperature A measure of the average kinetic energy of all the particles in a an object.
Degrees Equally spaced units between two points.
Thermometer Instrument used to measure temperature.
