Common Persuasive Techniques

snob appeal | This technique suggests that people who use certain product or believe a certain opinion are somehow better than those who do not. |
celebrity endorsement/testimonial | This persuasive device involves a famous person supporting a product or belief. |
humor | This device catches an audience’s attention by being funny, silly, or light-hearted. |
emotional appeal | This technique uses strong words and/or images to make people feel a certain way (happy, sad, angry, etc.). |
purr words | This persuasive technique uses descriptive words that make people feel good about the product or subject being addressed. |
plain folks | This technique uses an average, ordinary person to sell a product or support an opinion. |
name-calling | This persuasive device involves people or companies using negative names to attack another’s character or company. |
repetition | This persuasive technique uses specific words (usually related to the name of the product) over and over again to make people remember them. |
