Science Vocab Unit 3

TermDefinition
Molecule a group of atoms bonded together, representing the smallest fundamental unit of a chemical compound that can take part in a chemical reaction.
Chemical Bond a strong force of attraction holding atoms together in a molecule or crystal, resulting from the sharing or transfer of electrons.
Chemical Formula a set of chemical symbols showing the elements present in a compound and their relative proportions, and in some cases the structure of the compound.
Compound a substance that is composed of two or more separate elements
Element each of more than one hundred substances that cannot be chemically interconverted or broken down into simpler substances and are primary constituents of matter.
Chemical Reaction a process that involves rearrangement of the molecular or ionic structure of a substance, as opposed to a change in physical form or a nuclear reaction.
Reactant a substance that takes part in and undergoes change during a reaction.
Product A new material formed in a chemical reaction
Open System mass is CONSERVED inside the system but energy enters and leaves the system freely.
Closed System a system that can EXCHANGE energy (as heat or work) but not matter, with its surroundings.
Law of Conservation of Mass Mass in an isolated system is neither created nor destroyed by chemical reactions or physical transformations.
