OSMOSIS The diffusion of water molecules across a selectively permeable membrane
CELL MEMBRANE A cell structure that controls what enters and leaves the cell; is selectively permeable
CYTOPLASM The gel-like substance in the cell that holds cell structures in place
EUKARYOTIC A cell that contains a nucleus and other organelles
CELL The basic unit of structure and function in all living things
PHOTOSYNTHESIS The process by which producers capture and use the sun’s energy to make food for themselves
MITOCHONDRIA A cell structure that produces most of the energy needed to carry out the cell’s functions
MEIOSIS The process that produces four sex cells, each containing half of the usual number of chromosomes
RIBOSOME A cell structure that makes proteins
CHLOROPLASTS A cell structure found in plant cells that contains chlorophyll; where photosynthesis takes place
MITOSIS The stage of the cell cycle during which the cell divides into two identical cells
ENDOPLASMIC RETICULUM A cell structure that forms a passageway for proteins and other materials to be carried around the cell
VACUOLE A cell structure that stores food, enzymes, water and waste
CELL WALL A cell structure found in plant cells that provides protection and support to the plant
PROKARYOTIC A cell that does not contain a nucleus or other organelles
NUCLEUS A cell structure that controls all of the cell’s activities
DIFFUSION The process by which molecules move from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration; does not use energy
TISSUE A group of cells working together
ACTIVE TRANSPORT The process by which molecules move from an area of low concentration to an area of high concentration; requires energy
CELLULAR RESPIRATION The process of breaking down food to release energy
