Sensation and Perception

QuestionAnswer
Gestalt the organized whole is greater than the sum of its parts. Perception is holistic.
Basic Law of perception people perceive what the expect to perceive.
Perception pain is increased by attending to it.
Illusions and Hallucinations Illusions: shared misperceptions by most people in the same situation Hallucinations: non-shared perceptual distortions. misperception is not the same as misconception
Somesthetic (body) senses Skin senses (touch, pressure, pain, temperature) Kinesthetic sense (location of body parts) Vestibular sense (balance)
5 basic tastes salty, sour, bitter, sweet, umami
Chemical senses smell (olfaction) and taste (gustation) work together. molecules attach to the sensory receptors
Hearing (audition) tiny hair-like cilia are the sensory receptors for hearing and are located in the shell-shaped cochlea. Hearing can be impaired at the nerves or the bones.
Photoreceptors The retina contains two kinds of photoreceptors; rods(black and white) and cones(color). The axons form a bundle called the optic nerve and cross before reaching the occipital lobe. (Optic nerve causes blind spot)
Transduction The conversion of energy from one form to another.
Sensory adaptation and habituation Sensory adaptation: occurs in sensory receptor cells by becoming less responsive to unchanging stimuli. Habituation: occurs in brain by filtering out information.
Absolute thresholds The smallest amount of energy required to be detected 50% of the time
Psychophysics Study of the relationship between sensation and perception. (Term from Gustav Fechner)
Sensation and perception sensation: the process of receiving information from the environment perception: the process of organizing and interpreting information
Vestibular sense The semicircular canals in the inner ear gives us a sense of our orientation to gravity.
