Periodic Table Set

QuestionAnswer
What does the periodic table arrange? All of the known elements in order of increasing atomic number (number of protons). Order generally coincides with increasing atomic mass, too.
Metals are what at what room temperature except for what? Metals are solid at room temperature except for mercury.
What does ductile mean and are metals or nonmetals ductile? Ductile means you can bend the metal into a wire.
What does malleable mean? Malleable means you can hammer the metal and it won't shatter.
Are metals good conductors or insulators of heat and electricity? Metals are good conductors of heat and electricity.
Do metals have high or low densities? Metals have high densities.
Do metals have high or low melting points? Metals have high melting points.
Are metals reactive? Metals are very reactive.
What does luster mean? Do nonmetals have good luster? Luster means you have a shiny appearance and nonmetals have no luster (that means they have a dull appearance).
Are nonmetals good conductors or insulators of heat and electricity? Nonmetals are good insulators of heat and electricity.
Are nonmetals ductile? Nonmetals are not ductile.
Are nonmetals malleable? Nonmetals are not malleable.
Do nonmetals have a high or low densities? Nonmetals have low densities.
Do nonmetals have high or low melting points? Nonmetals have low melting points.
Are nonmetals more or less reactive? Nonmetals are less reactive than metals.
What are metalloids? Metalloids are elements on both sides of the zigzag line and have properties of both metals and nonmetals.
What are periods? Periods are the rows numbered from 1-7.
The atomic number increases from right-left or left-right in periods? The atomic number increases from left to right.
Are chemical properties all similar in periods? Chemical properties are not all similar.
What are groups? Groups are the columns numbered from 1-18.
Groups have the same number of what? Groups have the same number of valence electrons.
Are chemical properties similar in groups? Chemical properties are very similar in groups.
In groups, the elements are more reactive where? Least reactive where? The elements are more reactive in group 1 and least reactive in group 18.
Valence electrons are the key to which process? Valence electrons are the key to the reactivity of atoms.
Reactivity changes where? Reactivity changes across the periodic table.
Alkali metals are in group 1 and are what? Alkali metals are highly reactive metals and are never found uncombined in nature. The metals are so soft, they can be cut with a butter knife.
Alkaline-Earth metals are in group 2 and are what? Alkaline-earth metals are fairly reactive metals. They are not as reactive as Alkali Metals, but still never found uncombined in nature. Serve as important minerals for our body.
Transition Metals are in groups 3-12 and are what? Transition metals are less reactive metals. They are hard dense metals that are useful as building materials, jewelry, and coins. They are also used as oxides to make paints and pigments.
Noble Gases are in group 18 and are what? Noble gases are unreactive gases that do not react naturally. They are always found on their own in nature. They are used in "neon" signs, balloons, and light bulbs.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
