What is a map?


What are two tools that can help you learn about the Earth? 1) A globe. 2) A map.
What is a globe? It is a model of the planet as if you were looking at the Earth from outer space.
What is a map? It is a picture of the Earth on a flat surface.
What is very useful about a map? It can be carried around anywhere
What information do maps and globes show? They both show the seven continents and the five oceans.
What does the title tell you? It tells you the purpose of the map.
What does the legend tell you? It tells you what certain symbols on a map mean.
What is a compass rose? A tool that tells you your direction or the direction on a map.
What are the eight directions on a compass rose? North-N, Northeast-NE, East-E, Southeast-SE, South-S, Southwest-SW, West-W, and Northwest-NW.
What are the cardinal directions on a compass rose? North-N, East-E, South-S, and West-W.
What are the intermediate directions on a compass rose? Northeast-NE, Southeast-SE, Southwest-SW, and Northwest-NW.
What is a scale on a map? It shows standard and metric lengths on a map equal to real life measurements.
What is an inset found on a map? It is a smaller map that shows a larger area of land around a map, and can sometimes be found on a map.
On a legend or key, what might a dot stand for? A city.
A black line on a map could stand for what? A state or a country border.
Who are cartographers? Map makers.
Cartographers might make different maps and might use different what? Legends and scales.
What is one reason for making different kind of maps? To represent different map subjects or other ways to read a map.
What does a political map show you? Major states, cities, capitals, borders and famous landmarks.
Want does a historical map show you? A map of a place, but back in history.
What does a road map show you? Major roads, cities, and highways.
What does a land use map show you? How much land his used for factories, cities, highways, roads, and other buildings.
What does a physical map show you? It shows you natrual features, vegetation grounds, deserts, and bodies of water.
What does a climate map show you? It shows you the climate of a certain region or area.
What does a natural resource map show you? It shows you all the natural resources avalible in a area or region.
What does a population density map show you? It shows you the population of a area or region.
