Analytical Psychology (Jung) Ryckman 10e

analytical psychology Jung's unique brand of psychology which emphasizes the complex interplay between oppositional forces within the psyche and the ways in which these internal conflicts affect personality development
anima Ted feminine archetype in men, including both positive and negative characteristics of the trans-personal female. In a posititive sense, it involves a sense of warmth and intuitive undersanding; in a negative sense, it involves moodiness and irritability
animus The masculine archetype in women, both positive & negative characterisitics of the transpersonal male. Positive s- involves an ability to reason & use logic to solve problems; negative - involves an uncritical dogmatic adherence to certain ideas.
archetypes Universal themes or symbols that can be activated by forces operating in the psyche,thereby generating visions that are projected onto current experiences
collective unconscious The depository of instincts and archetypes that go beyond personal experience. These transpersonal experiences are the residue of human evolutionary development and can be activated underthe proper conditions
complex Collection of thoughts united by a common feeling.
dominant characteristics In Jung's theroy, developed, differntiated, and conscious parts of the psyche.
ego Force i the personlaity responsible for feelings of identitity and continuity.
extraversion One of two basic attidues postulated by Jung, characterized by an outgoing and relatively confident approach to life.
extraverted feeling type Individual characterized positively by an acceptance of the standards of society and negatively by a change in emotions from situation to situation, along with an indiscriminate yielding to the expectations of others.
extraverted intuitive type Individual characterized positively by a quick grasp of the creative possibilities in various ventures and negatively by impatience and flightiness.
extraverted sensing type Individual characterized positively by an appreciation for the arts and negatively by crude pleasure seeking
extraverted thinking type Individual characterized in a positive way by an ability to organize masses of facts into a coherent theory and in a negative way by a selfish and exploitative attitude toward others.
inferior characteristics In Jung's theory, underdeveloped, undifferentiated, and unconscious parts of the psyche.
introversion One of two basic attitudes postulated by Jung, characterized by a retiring and reflective approach to life.
introverted feeling type Individual characterized positively by intense feelings of sympathy for others who have experienced misfortune and negatively by shyness and inaccessibility
introverted intuitive type Individual characterized positively by the ability to envision the future and negatively by an inability to communicate effectively with others
introverted sensing type Individual characterized positively by the intensity of subjective sensations and negatively by oversensitivity and obtuseness.
introverted thinking type Individual characterized positively by imagination and an ability to think originally and boldly and negatively by social ineptness.
irrational functions Modes of apprehending the world without evaluating it. For Jung, sensation and intuition were the irrational (nonrational) functions.
life process energy All of the urges that are derived from conflict between forces in the psyche.
mandala Symbolic representation of the self or of the world.
method of amplification Therapeutic technique in which the patient and analyst continue to reassess and reinterpret the same symbols in an attempt to broaden their understand of them
Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) A paper-and -pencil test designed to measure the various psychological types postulated by Jung
persona Archetype consisting of the role human beings play in order to meet the demands of others. The persona also allows them to express their innermost feelings in ways acceptable to other people.
personal unconscious In Jung's theory, the region that contains all of the personal experiences that have been blocked from awareness.
principle of entropy In Jungian theory, the idea that energy is automatically redistributed in the psyche in order to achieve equilibrium or balance.
principle of equivalence The idea that energy expended in one part of the psyche will be compensated for by an equal amount of energy in the same or different form in another part of the psyche. Thus, energy is neither created nor lost but simply shifted between regions.
principle of opposites The idea that the energy that propels personality and behavior is derived from the interplay between opposite forces within the psyche.
principle of synchronicity Belief that there is an acausal order in the world that has meaning and that goes beyond causality.
psyche A construct postulated by Jung to represent all of the interacting systems within human personality that are needed to account for the mental life and behavior of the person.
rational funcitons Modes of making judgments or evaluations of events in the world. For Jung, thinking and feeling were rational functions.
self In Jung's theory, an archetype that leads people to search for ways of maximizing the development of their potential.
self-ralization Process that involves the healthy development of people's capabilities, enabling them to fulfill their own unique natures.
shadow The inferior, evil, and repulsive side of human nature.
symbol In Jung's psychology, a representation of a psychic fact. Each symbol was thought to have multiple meanings and to be incapable of being understood completely.
theory of psychological types Theory proposed by Jung in which people can be classified into eight types on the basis of a combination of attitudes and functions
transcendent function The process by which a conflict is resolved by bringing opposing forces into balance with each other through understanding.
word association test Therapeutic technique in which patients are presented with stimulus words and asked to give responses to them. Greater time latencies in responding are assumed to reflect the existence of underlying problems.
