Chapter 16 Section 4

America Moves Toward War

QuestionAnswer
What was Roosevelts conflict? He believed in peace (neutrality) but he knew that a Europe ruled by dictators would not be peaceful
How did Roose change the Neutrality Act? He added in that US arms could be transported to Britain and France to help battle Hitler. Isolationists were against him.
After scrambling to get more supplies to Britain, what happened? Germany, Italy, and Japan signed the Tripartite Pact and declared that they were the Axis Powers. This shocked Americans, if we entered the war we would be attacked on both sides
How did the US build defenses? We drafted 16 million men and rose the spending for national defense
Why did Roosevelt get elected for a third term? His opponent, Willkie, had the same views as Roosevelt so citizens voted for the guy they knew best.
Why did Roose believe we had to be the great arsenal of democracy? Hitler was not going to be reasoned into being peaceful, we had to fight fire with fire
What was the lend-lease policy? The US would lend things to countries in order to protect the US. Isolationists once again argued against this
Who did we support ONLY because of the terms of the lend-lease policy? The Soviet Union when Hitler invaded them
What were wolf packs? Packs of u-boats that would sink American Merchant ships. eventually the packs were stopped by radar tracking methods
What was the Atlantic Charter? It joined Britain and the US into the Allied powers by approving that they would work for a common goal
Why did a US declaration of war seem inevitable? German U-boats were sinking a ton of our ships so we decided to fight back
Who was Hideki Tojo? The Japanese chief of army staff, he decided it would be a good idea to declare war on the US in order to gain our Pacific islands
What were the Peace Talks? Japan and the US tried to negotiate peace but Tojo ignored all this and decided to declare war
What was the final straw that made Americans want to go to war? The bombing of Pearl Harbor, Hawaii
