Civil War Vocabulary

A stack of terms based on the vocabulary covered in Chapters 15-16, American Jou

TermDefinition
Sectionalism Loyalty to one's region
Fugitive A runaway person, or a person who attempted to run away.
Secede To withdraw or to leave
Abstain To refrain from taking part in an activity, such as voting.
Popular Sovereignty A Core Democratic Value which states that the government rules through the will of the people. In context of the Civil War, the phrase referred to the idea that the people in a territory had the right to decide if the territory should permit slavery.
Border Ruffians Pro-slavery inhabitants of Missouri who traveled in armed groups to Kansas in order to vote in the election to outlaw slavery in the 1850's.
Aresenal A storage area for weapons and ammunition
Martyr A person who dies for a cause.
Secession To secede from another country (in this case, the Union)
States' Rights The idea that states' rights overrule federal rights.
Border State The states which bordered both the Union and the Confederacy who debated on seceding from the Union.
Blockade To prevent supplies from reaching or exiting an area by military means.
Offensive Being in a position of attacking or attacking opponents.
Rebel A Confederate soldier, as they opposed the Union
Yankee A Union soldier
Blockade Runner A ship who manages to enter and exit a blockaded area.
Ironclad An armored navel vessel.
Casualty A member of the military who was wounded, was killed, or was captured
Emancipate To grant freedom to a slave
Ratify To officially support a proposal.
Habeas Corpus An inquiry to determine whether a person has been incarcerated lawfully.
Draft The selection of persons to serve in the military.
Bounty Money given as a reward for committing an action, such as enlisting in the army.
Greenback The first paper money printed by the Union during the Civil War,
Inflation An increase in the cost of goods and services over a period of time. This is because the devaluation of money.
Entrenched To occupy a strong defensive position.
Total War To attack all areas of opponents' life.
