Astronomy

TermDefinition
Sun the largest star that the Earth and other planets move around. It gives the planets heat and light.
Comet is like an asteroid but comets display a trail of ice and gas when orbiting close enough to the sun.
Asteroid is a large rock sometimes miles wide that orbits the Sun. They sometimes crash into Earth and are called meteorites.
Planet A ____________________must orbit the sun. It must have enough gravity to maintain a spherical shape.
Moon the large solid object that circles the Earth and that shines at night by reflecting light from the sun.
The names of the planets in order. Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune
Rotation to move in a circle around a central point or axis.
Axis An line about which a rotating body turns.
What causes day and night? The Earth rotates on its axis from west to east which takes 1 day or 24 hours to fully rotate. At all times 1/2 of Earth is lit by the Sun and 1/2 of the Earth is in darkness.
Revolution to move around a single point in a circular motion.
Tilt To cause to slope as by raising  one end; incline, lean, slope or slant.
What causes the seasons? The Earth's revolution and tilt cause the seasons.
