Citizenship Rights and Responsibility/ Documents that led to Democracy

What is Magna Carta? People could not be imprisoned (jailed) with out DUE PROCESS. This means they must have a trial and with a jury of peers.
What is English Bill of Rights? Document created in England which gave rights to citizens. Example, no cruel and unusual punishment, free elections, no excessive fines and the people had a right to complain to the King and not be punished for doing this.
What is Declaration of Independence? Break away letter from King George. States:
What is Bill of Rights? These are the first 10 amendments which protect the rights of the individual and the state rights. ex= 1st amendment is freedom of religion, speech, press, petition and assembly.
What is Mayflower Compact? First form of self government in America created by the Pilgrims. Remember they landed where they had no authority to be.
What is meant by "due process of law? This means legal procedures must be carried out by what is written in the laws. Your property cannot be taken away from you, or you punished unless these steps are completed. This makes sure the Government deals fairly to anyone accused of a crime.
What are some examples of due process of Law? Miranda Rights are read to you when you are arrested. You have a right to a lawyer, a speedy trial, a trial by jury, not to be tried for the same crime twice (no double jeporday).
