True Word clear communicative intent. recognizable pronunciation (it resembles adult form). used consistently and in multiple contexts (stable).
Protowords Productions that are used consistently by a child to refer to something, but do not resemble the adult form of the word. Understood by the family, but not by outsiders
First words are selected from across grammatical classes Nouns (predominate) Action verbs Personal-social words (no, please, okay, bye-bye, uh-oh) Prepositions, pronouns, and other “function” words (up, down, go-out, put-in, me, my, you) Adjectives and other modifiers
