Term | Definition |

Phonology | RULE-BASED system that governs how particular speech sounds are used to produce meaningful words; the systematic organization of sounds in a particular language. |
Phonological process | Systematic, rule-based techniques that children use to simplify adult speech. They are developmental in nature. |
Difference | a rule-based language style that deviates from the standard use of mainstream communication. |
Disorder | a significant discrepancy in language skills from what would be expected for a client’s age and developmental level when compared to peers. May be rule-based, but NOT typical. |
Dialect | a regional or cultural variation within a language that is used by a particular group of speakers. |
Poly-dialectic | able to navigate a group of dialects successfully. |
Code switching | ability to change dialects appropriately when entering different situations and/or speaking with different communication partners. |
Articulation | the motor production of speech sounds with regard to voice, place, manner. |
